July is World Watercolor Month. Over the weekend I ran across the “31 watercolors in 31 days” challenge on Dick Blick Art Materials’ website. After a bit more research, I discovered that World Watercolor Month™ was founded by Charlie O’Shields, the creator of Doodlewash®. He offers some great art prompts and hosts the World Watercolor Group™ on his site, so go check it out if you’re a watercolor enthusiast or need some inspiration.

Like I said when I posted this on my Instagram feed the other day, I doubt I’ll complete all 31 watercolors in 31 days (obviously since this is already day 5, now); but I plan to do as many as I can this month and post when I find the time. I’m working on numerous personal projects at this time, so my time is fairly limited at the moment. My absence from the blogosphere for more than a year is the result of nothing short of overwhelm and exhaustion.

Here’s hoping I can reclaim a regular blogging habit. If not, I encourage anyone interested to follow me on Instagram. I publish there far more regularly than anywhere else at this point simply for the ease of posting quickly.

Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, or reef triggerfish if you would prefer, is Hawaii’s state fish. During a recent visit to Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, I tried my best to get a good photo of this particular fish. Unfortunately, I failed. Every single photo turned out blurry, so I chose to work from those blurry photos to create this watercolor painting. I worked on this one 2 days. It turned out pretty decent for not having painted anything for several months.

Let’s hope it’s not another year between posts.

Sunday Sketch 5.15.16

I decided to work on a quick ballpoint ink pen sketch today to try to break through a prolonged creative block. David said, “Name it ‘Frank,'” ha ha. I still may color in the eyes red. He just looks sinister. It seems fitting that I chose a rabbit (specifically a hare) to draw today. As much as feeling creatively blocked, I’ve been distracted with other things, preventing me from doing much in the way of online activities. A couple of weeks ago, I did finally manage to choose a new look for my blog, though. I thought it was in need of a face lift. I’ve wanted to give this blog a fresher, simpler design for a while, now. I like the idea of having a banner here because I typically try to change-up my banners across all of my online hang-outs at least 4 times per year, as the season changes. I’ll add my blog to that rotation as well. Let me know what you guys think of the new look. I may create a static page for my best artwork. That is, if I can figure out how to do that. 0.o
