Day 18 Blackout

Many websites are blacked out today to protest proposed U.S. legislation that threatens internet freedom: the Stop Internet Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA). From personal blogs to giants like WordPress and Wikipedia, sites all over the web — including this one — are asking you to help stop this dangerous legislation from being passed. Please watch this video on Vimeo for more information and call your representative now.

I contacted Rep. Diane Black, Sen. Lamar Alexander, & Sen. Bob Corker to oppose SOPA & PIPA because I was surprised to learn that all 3 of my representatives support this legislation. Can I just say that as someone who avoids talking on the telephone at all costs, this took a lot for me to do. If I can call my representatives to oppose this legislation, anyone can!

While I do not agree with online piracy and feel that measures must be taken to protect intellectual property rights, I sincerely feel that SOPA & PIPA would be very bad for the internet, ie. censoring search results, stifling innovation, changing how we distribute information on the internet, just to name a few possibilities. Please, take action against censorship.
